Brant Decoy Carving Class: Red Head Decoy

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint a hollow cedar Redhead decoy. Students may choose a hen or drake to carve and paint; painting will be done in oils. Pre-registration is required by October 1, 2018.

Felting Pumpkins

Dress up your home this fall with felted wool pumpkins! Instructor Patricia Zackey will walk you through the process of needle felting wool to create these beautiful fairy tale pumpkins. All supplies and tools are provided. All skill levels welcome.

Wood Carving:  Mermaid

Join carver Mark Bair for this one day Mermaid Carving class – all levels welcome! Students will learn how to transform a simple basswood into a beautiful mermaid. Carving safety and techniques, tool sharpening, as well as painting and finishing techniques will also be studied. Fee includes instruction, materials, and use of tools.

Basic Book Binding

Learn to craft your own beautiful handmade book! *Beginners Welcome*

There is still something special about a handmade book. In this class, instructor Patricia Zackey, will teach you how to create an accordion folded bookmark book, an origami pocket notebook with a simple wrap closure and a pamphlet stitched, washi decorated sketchbook.  Remember, anything worth writing down is worth a handmade book!

Learn to Cross Stitch

Cross stitch has had a surge of popularity in recent years. Although traditional patterns are still very popular, you can cross stitch anything from movie quotes to video game characters. If you’ve always wanted to try, here’s your chance to learn how.

You’ll choose from 2 simple patterns, either of which could be completed during the 2-hour class. Instructor Karen Randazzo will not only teach the basic cross stitch and back stitch, but will also show you how to get started on your project, give you tips for finishing and displaying your work, and provide resources for how to move on to your next cross stitch creation.

Class fee includes all materials. Please bring a pair of scissors if you have them handy (embroidery type preferred), the instructor will also have some available to share. The class is suitable for adults and children ages 10 and up.

Flag Wall Basket

Make Your Own Bath Bombs

Learn to make your own Bath Bombs! Coconut oil, epsom salts and essential oils make bath time calming, soothing, and fragrant. These fizzy, skin softening, balls are fun to make and are great Mother’s Day gifts! All supplies provided to create 1 large bath bomb with gift bag.

There will be 2 separate classes – one at 11 am and the other at 1pm.

Wool Applique

This class will also be held on November 10.

In this workshop instructor Patricia Zackey will teach you how to apply patchwork-like designs to small items such as coasters, mug mats and potholders by using a variety of embroidery stitches. These techniques can easily be adapted outside the classroom to table runners, candle lamps and even wool quilts. All supplies and tools provided. All skill levels welcome.

Paper Flower Class

Looking for a little decor inspiration? DIY wedding idea? Or in need of a quick tabletop refresh? This is the class for you!

Join paper artist, Mallorie Evans, for this 2-hour class and learn how to create beautiful paper flowers. After you have the basics down, she’ll show you how to create an amazing paper flower backdrop for your next floral-inspired event.

All supplies, including flower templates, flower backing, and hanging materials are provided EXCEPT card stock in the colors of your choice.

You will need to purchase a pack of 25+ sheets of 60lb cardstock in your preferred colors prior to class OR purchase a cardstock packet available for sale on site for an additional $30.

Basic Knitting

New to Knitting? This class is for you! Beginning knitters will learn basic knit and purl stitches and begin making a scarf or a cowl. More experienced knitters may choose to make either a pair of fingerless mitts or a watch cap (beanie) which requires some shaping. Please bring along a pair of size 7 or 8 knitting needles.

Print Making

Learn the age old process of woodblock printmaking or relief printing with woodcarving artist Mark Bair. Starting with a block of wood and an idea, Mark will take you through the history, tools and materials used in the process. Armed with these new skills, each student will create their own lasting image. Instructor will provide all materials but students are encouraged to bring their own images or drawings.

The “Beginning Makers” series introduces traditional folk arts with hands-on projects that emphasize learning-through-doing in a comfortable, social environment. Learn about the history and the techniques used to create traditional folk art objects with these accessible and engaging classes!

The traditional South Jersey Berry Basket is the perfect project to learn basket weaving basics. Join Mary May as she discusses the history of these baskets while you learn to weave your own.

Seaport Stitchers Quilt Guild Demonstration

Stop by the Tuckerton Seaport’s Hunting Shanty to see what the Seaport Stitchers have been up to! The Stitchers will be working on current projects and answering questions about the art of quilting and sewing. Seaport Stitchers Quilt guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making and preserving quilts, and teaching the art of quilt making to others.

The quilting demonstrations will be repeated again on May 12, June 2, July 21, August 4 and October 6.

 

Wood Burning Workshop

Try your hand at wood burning! Pyrography is the process of burning a design into wood. The instructor, Greg Melega, will walk you through every step of the process from creating a design to the subtle techniques involved to make that image stand out on wood!

Beginning Weaving

Join instructor, Patricia Zackey, as she teaches you basic weaving by introducing the concepts of intersecting “warp” and “weft.” First you will create a woven paper greeting card. Next you will finger weave a key ring fob. And finally, using a simple chipboard loom, you will weave a small table mat or rustic wall hanging.

Alaia Surfboard Shaping Class

Shape your own Alaia and learn the history of the original surfboard. Create a solid wooden finless board with nearly all hand tools while learning many aspects of woodworking and basics of surfboard shaping. By the end of the class, you will walk away with a rideable six foot long western red cedar board you built with your own two hands and an understanding of what goes into making a surfboard function properly in the ocean. No prior knowledge is required, just a sense of adventure for fun!

Hand Plane Shaping Class

Make your own wooden handplane! A handplane is used while bodysurfing to give the rider lift, direction and speed while on a wave. Worn on your hand and with a pair of swim fins, these little boards can be used in small summer surf or big fast barrels! Learn the process of making a miniature surfcraft while using the tools and concepts of a surfboard shaper. A great half day class to take with friends!

Ruddy Turnstone Shore Bird Class

Join Andrew Tonnesen for a two day class in which you will learn to carve and paint a Ruddy Turnstone Shorebird. A product of the Tuckerton Seaport Youth Carvers, Andrew has grown into a skilled carver and instructor. He has won ribbons at events such as the Ocean County Decoy & Gunning Show and the Two Rivers Exhibition of Sporting Collectible Art and is an active member of the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Association.

Wood Carving: Old Salt

Chocolate Class

Spend a great afternoon at the Seaport learning to make delicious chocolate candies! We’ll be making molded chocolates, chocolate bark with mix-ins, and dipped treats. Cheese Basket

This beautiful Shaker cheese basket was once used for making cheese. Today this basket is a beautiful wall basket or use to hold anything you want to “show off.” Make a small, 12” basket for a material fee of $30, or a large 17” basket for a material fee of $40. Pre-registration is required by April 1, 2017.

Rain Barrel Class

Celebrate Earth Day by making a rain barrel for your garden! Rain barrels conserve storm water from your room. At this workshop, you will learn the benefits of rain barrels and build your own rain barrel to take home that day. Pre-registration is required by April 15, 2017.

Mason Jar Carrier Basket Class

Wall Basket with Contrasting Curls Class

Join Mary May for a fun basket that you will enjoy making! This narrow basket has an envelope shape with accent curls. We will add a small bushel handle in the back. “Just Your Size” Traditional Market Basket Workshop

Mary May will teach your to make this classic market basket, local to the South Jersey area, in your choice of three sizes and different handle shapes! Sizes include: Large which is 15” long, 7” wide, and 7” high, Medium which is 13” long, 7” wide, and 6.5” high, and small which is 11” long, 5” wide, and 6” high. Materials fee of $45 for large, $40 for medium, and $35 for small basket payable to instructor the day of the class. Runners will also be offered the day of the class, for an additional fee. Please choose basket size when signing up for class. Pre-registration is required by November 5, 2016.

In this two day class students will be lead through the process of making a series of Christmas cards. Using the old world technique of wood block printing, instructor Mark Bair will guide you through the process of designing, cutting the block, and printing a series of 12 holiday images of your choice. After the images have been printed you will learn how to mount them on cards, which you can personalize and give to family and friends as a holiday keepsake. Beginner and experienced students are all welcome. The materials and tools will be provided by the instructor; however students are encouraged to bring their own images.

The lore of spear fishing has been passed on from the North American natives to the European immigrants of the New World. Now highly sought after by collectors, ice fishing decoys are priced out of range for the average collector. Now you have the opportunity to create your own piece of American folk art. In this two day course, woodcarving artist Mark Bair will take you through the rich history, tools, and materials used so that you can create your very own piece of American folk art. All materials and tools are included but experienced carvers are invited to bring their own tools. Pre-registration is required by March 12, 2016.

This basket is beautiful for your table or your wall- a real show off! Join Mary May to make a beautiful Shaker-style cheese basket, 12” in diameter and 4” high. The large hexagonal weave was used for draining cheese curds, but today it can serve a variety of purposes or as a beautiful decorative piece. Materials fee of $30 is payable to instructor the day of the class. Pre-registration is required by May 14, 2016.

The two sizes include the original 30” size or the 16” bait size. Materials fee of $62 for the 30” basket or $40 for the 16” basket are payable to the instructor the day of the class.
