Find out what it takes to be a Barnegat Bay Decoy Carver, a traditional New Jersey Basket Weaver, or a Pinelands Blacksmith – sign up for or treat someone special to a Seaport class in 2020 – and bring a friend! Classes are offered for participants of all abilities with many family friendly options and your very own hand-crafted heirlooms to take home! The Seaport is offering beginner and intermediate classes on the traditions of the region including; crafting, basket weaving, wheat weaving, woodworking, blacksmithing, felting, surfboard shaping, wood burning, gardening, and more!

New this year: award-winning chainsaw carver and founder of Carve Wars, Joe Wenal will offer Chainsaw Carving 101 on Saturday, June 20th from 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM. Each student will learn the safety procedures and basics of chainsaw carving as they craft their own Owl! Participants must be 18 years or older.

Master Blacksmith Stephen Nuttall and Bob “the Blacksmith” Bethke will be offering drop-in Blacksmith 101 courses on select dates throughout the year. If you find them demonstrating in the shop – stop by and ask them how you can get involved! Participants must be 12 years or older and minors accompanied by an adult at all times.

On June 14th, Master Decoy Carver Jode Hillman will hold a Burnt Cork Black Duck class sponsored by Alyce Kudla in memory of her husband, carver, educator, and Seaport volunteer Nick Kudla. This course will be taken by Seaport Youth Carving students, ensuring this traditional form is carried on to another generation.

Help the Seaport ring in our 20th anniversary as we renovate the old bathhouse into the new home of our Jersey Shore Folklife Center! Situated along the Seaport boardwalk, the new home for the center will host 20 rotating exhibits in 2020, artists’ demonstrations, and classes. These efforts are made possible thanks to the Seaport’s small but dedicated legion of volunteers and tradition bearers committed to preserving the traditions of the Jersey Shore through exposure to the arts.
