Folklife doesn’t happen somewhere else — it happens right here in South Jersey!  Come explore the lives of traditional craftspeople, local musicians, and the many rich stories of Folklife in the Pinelands and on the Barnegat Bay.  You never know, you might even run into the Jersey Devil!

The Jersey Shore Folklife Center documents, supports, and presents the diverse communities and traditions of the Jersey Shore and the Pinelands.  The center offers classes, tours, school programs, artist demonstrations, and changing exhibits.  Stop by anytime during museum hours to check out the new and expanded Folklife center at Marshelder Gun Club.

Carving Class – Ring Necked Duck Decoy

Instructor: Jode Hillman
Date/Time: Sunday, February 21 and 28, 2021 10am – 5pm
Fee: $260 (includes materials)

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint a Ring-necked Duck Decoy. Students may choose a hen or drake decoy to carve on the first day of class and paint the following Sunday; painting will be done in oils. This class will be limited to four participants and take place within the Hunting Shanty at the Tuckerton Seaport.

Spring Peep Beginners Decoy Carving Class

Instructor: Andrew Tonnesen
Date/Time: Saturday, March 6, 2021 10am – 4pm
Fee: $75 (non-members)/$65 (members)

Join local carver Andrew Tonnesen in this class designed for beginning carvers.  Each participant will be carving and painting a Peep, or shorebird, to take home in this one-day class.  The class will accommodate 6 participants and be held in the Seaport’s Hunting Shanty building.

Prior experience is NOT required for this class.  Masks ARE required.

German Feather Tree Felting Class

Instructor: Niki Giberson
Date/Time: Saturday, March 20, 2021 10 am – Noon
Fee: $45 (non-member)/$36 member (includes materials)

German feather trees were made in the late 19th century to save the deforestation of evergreen trees in Germany.  Traditionally they were made of green dyed goose feathers.  These versions are made of wool and make a wonderful Christmas or year-round decorating item.

Niki Giberson will walk you through the process of creating your own tree which can me decorated seasonally.  All supplies and tools are provided. All skill levels welcome, no prior experience needed.

This class with take place inside the Hunting Shanty building to the right of the Visitor Center. Social distancing and masks are REQUIRED.

Easter Wreath Class

Instructor: Mallorie Evans
Date/Time: Sunday, March 28, 2021 11 am – 1pm
Fee: $47 (non-member)/$40 member (includes materials)

Join Mallorie Evans in March to create a spring wreath just in time for the Easter holiday.  Participants will create and take home a spring themed flower wreath.  All materials are provided.  This class will be limited to 6 participants and held inside the Seaport’s Hunting Shanty building.  Masks are required.

Songbird Felting Class

Instructor: Niki Giberson
Date/Time: Saturday, April 24, 2021 10 am – Noon
Fee: $45 (non-member)/$36 member (includes materials)

Niki Giberson will walk you through the process of needle felting wool to create two song birds of your choosing all made from wool from her sheep farm!  Some ideas and samples will be provided, but you can also bring your own pictures for inspiration.

All supplies and tools are provided. All skill levels welcome, no prior experience needed.

This class with take place inside the Hunting Shanty building to the right of the Visitor Center. Social distancing and masks are REQUIRED.

Carving Class – Black Duck Silhouette Decoy

Instructor: Jode Hillman
Date/Time: Sunday, June 6, 2021 9:30 am – 4 pm
Fee: $250 (includes materials)

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive single day class in which students will focus on the history, application and usage of traditional hunting Decoys produced in NJ. Students will carve and paint a Black Duck Silhouette decoy. The completed decoy will be suitable for hunting use or decorative display. Students may choose a hen or drake decoy to carve. This class will be limited to eight participants and take place OUTSIDE the Hunting Shanty at the Tuckerton Seaport.

Prior carving experience is required. Masks are REQUIRED.

Price includes materials fee of $60

Carving Class – Common Eider Drake Decoy

Date/Time: Sunday, October 3 and Sunday, October 10, 2021 9:30 am – 5 pm
Fee: $350 (includes materials)

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint a Common Eider Drake decoy. Students will begin to carve a drake on the first day of class and paint the following Sunday; painting will be done in oils. This class will be limited to eight participants and take place OUTSIDE the Hunting Shanty at the Tuckerton Seaport.

Prior carving experience is required. Masks are REQUIRED.

Price includes materials fee of $60.
