Classes

Folklife doesn’t happen somewhere else — it happens right here in South Jersey!  Come explore the lives of traditional craftspeople, local musicians, and the many rich stories of Folklife in the Pinelands and on the Barnegat Bay.  You never know, you might even run into the Jersey Devil!

The Jersey Shore Folklife Center documents, supports, and presents the diverse communities and traditions of the Jersey Shore and the Pinelands.  The center offers classes, tours, school programs, artist demonstrations, and changing exhibits.  Stop by anytime during museum hours to check out the new and expanded Folklife center at Marshelder Gun Club.

For the classes listed below, payment in full is required at time of registration. No refunds will be given. Tuckerton Seaport reserves the right to make changes to instructors, programs, session dates and times.

Please Note:  To register for a class, please click the appropriate button below.  On the class registration page, please select the date of the class and then the time.  Use the drop-down arrow to select the number of people who will be attending, click “Add Tickets to Cart” and then complete the registration/payment information.

Carving Class – Black Duck Silhouette Decoy

Please note:  This class will be rescheduled for a date later this year.

Fee: $250 (includes materials)

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive single day class in which students will focus on the history, application and usage of traditional hunting Decoys produced in NJ. Students will carve and paint a Black Duck Silhouette decoy. The completed decoy will be suitable for hunting use or decorative display. Students may choose a hen or drake decoy to carve. This class will be limited to eight participants and take place OUTSIDE the Hunting Shanty at the Tuckerton Seaport.

Prior carving experience is required. Masks are REQUIRED.

Price includes materials fee of $60.

Woven Cattail Class

Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Saturday, October 23, 10am-12pm
Fee: $39 (non-member)/$36 member (includes materials)

During the Victorian era, cattails served as a symbol of peace and prosperity. If you look, you will see tall slender cattails in the wetlands of New Jersey. Lucky for us these hand-woven beauties will not go to seed!!

Price includes materials and tools needed.

The class will be held at the Jersey Shore Folklife Center at the Seaport.

Caramel Popcorn Basket Class

Instructor: Niki Giberson

Fee: $55 (non-member)/$51 member (includes materials)

This “Shaker Cat’s head” style basket is approximately 12” round, has wooden bushel basket style handles, seagrass accents and sits on the bottom 4 corners. Perfect for serving caramel popcorn. Recipe is included.

All materials are included. The class will be held at the Jersey Shore Folklife Center at the Seaport.

Masks are required indoors for everyone.

The Josie Basket Class

Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Saturday, November 13, 10am-3pm
Fee: $71 (non-member)/$65 member (includes materials)

The Josie basket is woven using a custom mold to guarantee its beautiful shape. We will be using a chase weave technique with fine weavers. The bonnet handle adds to Josie’s charm. Your basket will be finished with hand bent rims which will complete your well-balanced basket. The finished basket is 8″ long X 5″ wide X 6″ high.

Cost includes all materials and use of tools needed to complete the basket.

The class will be held at the Jersey Shore Folklife Center at the Seaport.

Woven Christmas Tree Class

Instructor: Niki Giberson
Date/Time: Saturday, December 11, 10am-12pm
Fee: $59 (non-member)/$54 member (includes materials)

Using an 8” wooden base and upright spokes, students will create a woven Christmas tree which can be decorated to their liking.

All materials are included. The class will be held at the Jersey Shore Folklife Center at the Seaport.

Splint Woven Stool Class

Fee: $54 (non-member)/$48 member (includes materials)

Niki Giberson will walk you through the process of weaving a seat on a wooden framed stool 12”x 9”x 8” high.  The same process can be used to reseat antique chairs.

All supplies, stool frame and tools are provided. All skill levels welcome, no prior experience needed.

The class will be held at the Jersey Shore Folklife Center at the Seaport.

Wall Basket Class

Make a new tradition on Super Bowl Sunday! This useful basket is 12″ long X 3″ wide X 8″ high in size and has a bushel handle for attaching to the wall. There is something about usefulness and beauty that goes well together. What will you put in your basket???

Class fee includes instruction, materials and everything needed to go home with to complete your basket.
