Classes

Folklife doesn’t happen somewhere else — it happens right here in South Jersey!  Come explore the lives of traditional craftspeople, local musicians, and the many rich stories of Folklife in the Pinelands and on the Barnegat Bay.  You never know, you might even run into the Jersey Devil!

The Jersey Shore Folklife Center documents, supports, and presents the diverse communities and traditions of the Jersey Shore and the Pinelands.  The center offers classes, tours, school programs, artist demonstrations, and changing exhibits.  Stop by anytime during museum hours to check out the new and expanded Folklife center at Marshelder Gun Club.

Lunch and Learn – 2019-20

Wood Burned Welcome Sign Class

Join artist Jennifer Hewitt and hand craft a Welcome Sign for your home! Choose the provided design..or bring in your own! You will be walked through every step of the process from creating a design to the subtle techniques involved to make that image stand out on wood.

Easter Bunny Felting Class

Hop into spring with this fun (and beginner friendly!) class lead by instructor Niki Giberson who will walk you through the process of needle felting wool to customize your own Easter bunny! All supplies and tools are provided. All skill levels welcome.

Eel Fyke Class

New! Stop by the Seaport to weave a traditional, working Eel Fyke with Master Basket Weaver Mary May. This classic design includes funnel and Atlantic White Cedar plug.

Beeswax Candlemaking Class

Join Anna & Angelo Trapani as they teach you how to create your very own beeswax candle! Discover how to prepare and pour your own molds with all natural honey! Through this experience, you will also learn about the  history and properties of beeswax from experts. Anna and Angelo are award-winning bee keepers from the third generation family owned and operated farm, Trapper’s Honey.

Compass Wood Burning Class

Woven North African Fringe Class

Create a woven North African fringe, a house blessing in Egypt and Morocco, perfect for any home! New Jersey was once considered the bread basket of the American colonies with the best flouring mills in the 18th century. Because of the Industrial Revolution and changes made in harvesting methods, the art of wheat weaving was almost completely lost. Join us as folk artist Christine Metzler helps us rediscover this once common art form that originated overseas.

Daffodil Centerpiece

Nothing says Spring like these beautiful yellow paper flower daffodils!  They are made with high quality cardstock that will hold up for years to come. These paper daffodils are displayed in a glass vase with twine detail and will add a pop of color to your home. These beautiful forever flowers are a unique and creative gift idea for your loved ones!

Owl Felting Class

The Josie Class

New! Stop by the Seaport to Master Basket Weaver Mary May for a unique basket design with a very fine weave. Beginners can make a 7″ wide basket and more experienced weavers can make a 9″ wide basket. A bonnet handle will be included in the material fee. Alaia Surfboard Shaping Class

Instructor: Greg Malega
Date/Time: Saturday, June 6, 2020  10am-4pm
Fee: $400 members/ $425 nonmembers, includes materials fee

Shape your own Alaia and learn the history of the original surfboard. Create a solid wooden fin-less board with nearly all hand tools while learning many aspects of woodworking and basics of surfboard shaping. By the end of the class, you will walk away with a rideable six foot long western red cedar board you built with your own two hands and an understanding of what goes into making a surfboard function properly in the ocean. No prior knowledge is required, just a sense of adventure for fun!

Father’s Day Picture Frame Class

Hand Plane Shaping Class

Instructor: Greg Malega
Date/Time: Saturday, June 13; 10am – 3pm
Fee: $150 members/ $160 nonmembers, materials included

Make your own wooden handplane! A handplane is used while body surfing to give the rider lift, direction, and speed while on a wave. Worn on your hand and with a pair of swim fins, these little boards can be used in small summer surf or big fast barrels! Learn the process of making a miniature surf craft while using the tools and concepts of a surfboard shaper. A great half day class to take with friends!

Paper Hydrangea Centerpiece Class

Chainsaw Carving 101 Class

Instructor: Joe Wenal
Date/Time: Saturday, June 20, 2020 9:30am – 3:30pm
Fee: $450 members/ $500 nonmembers

Join award-winning chainsaw carver and founder of Carve Wars, Joe Wenal, as he teaches you how to block out and finish carve your own owl to take home! As part of the class everyone will carve their own owl. Made from red cedar and pine, the owls will be between 1 and 2 feet tall. Each student will receive their own protective eye wear and ear protection. Saws will be provided by the instructor. The class will touch on a number of carving techniques, safety equipment, saws and maintenance, and specialty tools. No prior experience needed. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dusty!

Class participants must be at least 18 years old.

Blacksmithing Class – Clam Knife

Instructor: Stephen Nuttall
Date/Time: Saturday, June 27, 2020 10am – 4pm
Fee: $155 members/ $170 nonmembers (additional $10 materials fee)

Aw, shucks! Come to the Tuckerton Seaport to forge your very own functional replica clam knife! Blacksmith Stephen Nuttall will teach you basic blacksmithing techniques and safety, leaving you with a handcrafted and functional clam knife! Must be 12 years or older. Minors must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course.

Fee: $155 for members/ $170 for non-members.  An additional $10 materials fee should be paid to the instructor the day of the class.

Hometown Woodburned Sign Class

Cupcake Pin Cushion Felting Class

Pound Fishing Basket Class

Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Friday, August 14, 2020 10am-5pm
Fee: $42 members/ $47 nonmembers, plus $65 materials fee

New! Stop by the Seaport to Master Basket Weaver Mary May will walk you through this classic, working Pound Fishing basket.  This basket is done with an “over one under one, square to round” construction. It has double lashed rims for sturdiness. These baskets were traditionally tarred for longevity, some painted with identifying marks, and have been used by commercial fishermen off Long Beach Island from the late 1800’s to 1940’s. Visit the Tuckerton Seaport’s Crest Fishery exhibit to see historical examples. Runners and 2 bushel handles are included in the material fee. The material fee of $65 will be paid directly to the artist on the day of the course.

Paper Sunflowers Centerpiece Class

Carving Class – Ring Necked Duck Decoy

Instructor: Jode Hillman
Date/Time: Sunday, October 4 and 11, 2020 10am – 5pm
Fee: $190 members/ $200 nonmembers

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint  a Ring Necked Duck decoy. Students may choose a hen or drake to carve and paint; painting will be done in oils.

Prior carving experience is required.

Woven Ear of Corn Class
