Folklife doesn’t happen somewhere else — it happens right here in South Jersey!  Come explore the lives of traditional craftspeople, local musicians, and the many rich stories of Folklife in the Pinelands and on the Barnegat Bay.  You never know, you might even run into the Jersey Devil!

The Jersey Shore Folklife Center documents, supports, and presents the diverse communities and traditions of the Jersey Shore and the Pinelands.  The center offers classes, tours, school programs, artist demonstrations, and changing exhibits.  Stop by anytime during museum hours to check out the new and expanded Folklife center at Marshelder Gun Club.

Payment in full is required at time of registration. No refunds will be given. If you cancel in writing at least 48 hours prior to the first day of class, a credit will be issued for a Tuckerton Seaport purchase within one year. The Tuckerton Seaport reserves the right to make changes to instructors, programs, session dates and times.

Beeswax Candle Making Class

Instructor: Anna & Angelo Trapani
Date/Time: Saturday, April 6, 2019 11am – 2pm
Fee: $20 members/ $25 nonmembers

Join Anna & Angelo Trapani as they teach you how to create your very own beeswax candle! Discover how to prepare and pour your own molds with all natural honey! Through this experience, you will also learn about the  history and properties of beeswax from experts. Anna and Angelo are award-winning bee keepers from the third generation family owned and operated farm, Trapper’s Honey.

Spring Flower Wreath Class

Spring has sprung! Featuring brightly colored paper flowers, this wreath craft captures the essence of spring. This DIY wreath allows you to tap into your crafty side! Hang the finished wreath on your front door or in your home to add a fresh dose of spring to your home décor!

All supplies, including wreath, card stock, glue and flower templates, are included.

Felted Easter Bunny Class

Instructor: Niki Giberson
Date/Time: Saturday, April 20, 2019 2pm – 4pm
Fee: $25 members/ $30 nonmembers, materials included

Just in time for Easter! Create your own needle felted Easter bunny with artist Niki Giberson. This 5” tall bunny will be made of wool sheared from her own Swan Bay Farm sheep in Port Republic, NJ. This class is for adults and children over 8 years old. A very sharp needle is used in the process.

Whale Carving Class

Join carver Mark Bair for this one day Whale Carving class – all levels welcome! Students will learn how to transform a simple basswood into a majestic Whale. Carving safety and techniques, tool sharpening, as well as painting and finishing techniques will also be studied. Fee includes instruction, materials, and use of tools.

Gardening Program:  Worms eat my garbage!

Instructor: Jeanine Cava
Date/Time: Saturday, April 27, 2019 1pm – 3pm
Fee: $35 per bin for members/ $40 per bin for nonmembers

Learn about the fun and environmental benefits of keeping a worm composting bin! Each family will take home one bin. Worms will turn your lunch and kitchen scraps into one of nature’s best soil amendments. Your garden plants and the Earth will thank you! Plus, you’ll have adorable new pets that provide a useful service!

You will help make your own bin, learn how to care for it, harvest the vermicompost (when it is ready) and take home a “starter” amount of red wriggler worms to get you started. If you have your own electric drill (battery powered) feel free to bring it. We will have some to share as well.

Hand Plane Shaping Class

Instructor: Greg Melega
Date/Time: Saturday, May 4, 2019 10am – 4pm
Fee: $150 members/ $160 nonmembers, materials included

 

Make your own wooden handplane! A handplane is used while bodysurfing to give the rider lift, direction, and speed while on a wave. Worn on your hand and with a pair of swim fins, these little boards can be used in small summer surf or big fast barrels! Learn the process of making a miniature surfcraft while using the tools and concepts of a surfboard shaper. A great class to take with friends!

Mother’s Day Bouquet Berry Basket

Looking for the perfect gift for Mother’s Day? Hand-craft your own petite bouquet holder! Surprise mom with this beautiful piece or treat her to a fun day out! Folk artist Mary May will guide you through turning traditional berry baskets into a unique bouquet gift.

Flower on Canvas Class

Blacksmithing – Clam Knife

Instructor: Stephen Nuttall

Aw, shucks! Come to the Tuckerton Seaport to forge your very own clam knife! Blacksmith Stephen Nuttall will teach you basic blacksmithing techniques and safety, leaving you with a handcrafted and functional clam knife!

Hand-woven Backpack Class

Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Friday, August 2, 2019 10am – 4pm
Fee: $45 members/ $50 nonmembers, plus $65 materials fee

New! Craft your own unique woven backpack! This “trap basket” was traditionally used to collect pinecones in New Jersey. Weave your own and it can be used as a backpack, decoration, or a functional laundry basket. The basket includes a handle and for a small upcharge, you may decide to add straps or a runner. Experience is welcome but not necessary.

Fall Sunflower Decor

Carving Class – Barrow’s Goldeneye Decoy

Instructor: Jode Hillman
Date/Time: Sunday, October 13 and 20, 2019 10am – 5pm
Fee: $190 members/ $200 nonmembers

 

Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive TWO DAY class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint Barrow’s Goldeneye decoy. Students may choose a hen or drake to carve and paint; painting will be done in oils.  Prior carving experience is required.

Wine Basket Class

Date/Time: Saturday November 16, 2019 10am – 2pm
Fee: $25 members/ $30 nonmembers, plus additional $15 materials fee

What’s better than wine? Wine in a basket! This wine tote has remained a popular favorite. Choose from a single bottle wine basket or a double bottle wine carrying basket each with a new twill accent weave and an oak swing handle. Great for yourself or as a holiday gift!

Total cost for registration includes a materials fee and a class fee. Why two fees? The material fee covers the use of everything you need to complete your basket: tools, molds (if needed), reed, handle, etc. The class fee supports the local artisan and the Tuckerton Seaport and Baymen’s Museum (a non-profit 501c3). Pay the class fee to the Seaport and the material fee directly to the instructor.

Santa Wood Carving Class
